Chosen

Chosen - P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast This book picks off directly where #2 ended. I'm still enjoying reading this series and will be continuing reading it for sure! The main story is quite good in my opinion.

The only thing that's not to my liking is the love drama between Zoey and her "boyfriends", but it's not annoying enough to ruin the story for me :)

Betrayed

Betrayed - Kristin Cast, P.C. Cast This is book 2 in the series, and picks up where the first one ended.

Zoey has settled down at her new school and is coming to terms with her new powers. But not everything is as it seems, and there is danger lurking around the corner. Then a teenage boy (human) disappears and is later found dead, apparently killed by a Vampyre. Is Zoey and her friends in danger? It might not always be great being the one with power, sometimes it might make you and your friends a target...

I am still liking this series, and will definitely be continuing with the next book. The only thing I have a problem with is the 'love-triangle'. In addition to her human ex-boyfriend (that she apparently is now more interested in after she discovered that his blood tastes awesome) and her new fledling boyfriend, she now also has one of the teachers seemingly interested in her... And of course (being a teenager I guess) she is completely unable to choose between them... Never been a huge fan of that type of drama. But it's not so bad that I don't want to keep reading.

Marked

Marked - Kristin Cast, P.C. Cast *** 3.5 Stars ***

I actually quite enjoyed this book, I was definitely pleasantly surprised! Nice version of the vampire story and how new vampires are 'made'. I like the main character Zoey, she seems pretty down to earth even when she discovers that she has special powers and that she is a very unique vampyre fledling.

And (in my opinion) it's not too 'angsty' like I find a lot of YA/NA books to be. There is a bit of love drama going on though, she deosn't seem able to choose between her ex-boyfriend and one of the other fledlings at her new school. I am hoping this won't be a huge part of the next books, I'm not a huge fan of the love-triangle dramas...

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, I am very interested in seeing what will happen next.

Raven's Gate

Raven's Gate - Anthony Horowitz This book was... ok.
And I'm not entirely sure why I didn't like it more than I did. I guess I'm older than the "target group", maybe that has something to do with it..? The story itself is good, lots of action and things happening all through the book. Maybe it is the writing style that doesn't appeal to me.

Because for me personally it didn't catch my full attention. It was a fairly quick read, and I had no problem reading the whole book. Although I don't think I will be spending money on the rest of the books in the series. Part of me wants to know how the story develops, and find out about the other 4 children with special powers. But not enough to spend the time and money reading the other books.

Ascend

Ascend - Amanda Hocking I enjoyed reading this series. Even though it is a Young Adult it was not overly filled with teen angst like so many in its genre. And I like that it was not the "traditional" creatures in it, but trolls or Trylle as they are called.

We meet Wendy who doesn't know she is a Trylle, and has grown up with humans like it is tradition to do in her "tribe". Her world changes when she starts getting powers that isn't human, and she discovers who she really is.

It does have its moments of teen love and heartbreak and angst and frustration, but it doesn't go over the top, and didn't ruin my reading experience.

Would recommend if you enjoy reading YA fantasy :)

The Vittra Attacks

The Vittra Attacks - Amanda Hocking Short story in the Trylle series.
Would recommend reading as part of the series, no point in reading as a stand-alone.

Willow Man

Willow Man - John Inman Before this I had never read a John Inman book. I realise now that this is a problem, and it needs to be sorted. This is possibly one of the best horror books I have read, it actually gave me goosebumps a couple of times. And that very rarely happens.

This book is horrible. But in a good way, the way a great horror is supposed to be. And it's awesome. It is also sad and sweet, exciting and shocking. All packaged up in a fantastic way of writing. Inmans writing is one of the best I have read in a long while, he has a way with words that I can't describe, other than it's awesome. (Really, you should try one of his books!)

If you like horror, I would strongly suggest you try this one out.

If you have problems reading blood and gore, or bad things happening to children then you might not like a few of the pages in this book. But for me, even though I didn't enjoy reading about those things, it was an important part of the book and it wouldn't have been the same without it.

Now I need to find out what else he has written... I need to read more!!

Untitled Dark Space

Darker Space - Lisa Henry *** 3.5 Stars ***

Dark Space (book #1 in the series) is one of my favourite books ever. So the anticipation before reading this one was high.

"Am I your heartbeat again?”
"You always have been."

It's been a few months since the story in the first book and Cam and Brady are living on Earth With Lucy. They have a good life together, though they are still being tested to see if the Faceless have changed them somehow. Brady is struggeling to move on from what happened. He is very depressed and angry at the world. Now, I have no problem understanding that he is struggling to cope. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a bit of PTSD from everything that happened. But to me it seemed.. too much? I mean, at least he has a great life now, right? And Lucy, his sister, is safe and living with them. And they both have a job and share a flat. Unfortunately it seemed to me like the first 1/3 of the book was about how moody and angry Brady is at the world and everything. And it was a bit much... And I missed a bit of the interaction between Brady and Cam from the first book.

Now that's the negative bit taken care of. Nice to get such Things out of the way quickly! Let's move on to the awesome bits!!

I am very happy that I kept reading! The second half of the book is great! There is a lot of action and surprises, aliens (possibly minor spoiler there, but come on - it shouldn't really come as a huge surprise!) and love.

The relationship between Brady and Cam seems to be more like it was in the first book too. And we get to hear what happened to some of the other characters in the first book.

I liked the way the book ended too, and can't wait for the 3rd book!

All in all I would say that the last half of the book would have been close to a 5 star, but the start pulled it down a little...

If you have read the first book and enjoyed it, I would definitely recommend reading this one too! And if you get to 30% and you think it's slightly disappointing, then please, please, keep reading!! It will be worth it, I promise! And you will be happy you did :)

The First Days: As the World Dies

The First Days: As the World Dies - Rhiannon Frater DNF at 50%

I tried with this book. I really did...
This book kept showing up on my recommended list, and the blurb sounded good. A zombie story with two women kicking ass? Sounds great, right?
Unfortunately, for me, the story just didn't follow up on the promise.

I think it was a combination of several things that didn't work for me.
Mainly it was the way the author describes... well everything. A lot of it seems like it doesn't have any place in the story. Like it's been put in as a page filler. Over time this really started to bug me. And some of the descriptions were just... weird.

The other thing that bugged me was the conversations. They sounded fake to me. And the descriptions of feelings were over the top.

In addition to this there were some things that just didn't make sense to me personally. Like the way Katie and Travis reacted to each other (I'm not going to go into detail as there might be minor spoilers involved). I felt the way Jenni reacted to Travis strange too. Her entire family turned into zombies and tried to eat her the day before and she takes one look at Travis and turns into some fangirling teenager? Just seems strange to me.

There were other things too, but I'm sure I've gone on enough! I got halfway through the book, I really liked the first chapter and I kept hoping it would get better again. Then today when I started the audio I accidentally skipped a chapter. It took me a few minutes to realize why it suddenly seemed like I had missed something. Then, after I understood what had happened, I actually considered not jumping back to see what I missed, as the book would be finished quicker. That's when I realized that I was not enjoying it at all, and that I have so many other books I could be enjoying instead!

The narrator was.. ok. She did an ok job with what she had to work with I think. The only thing I didn't like was how she did the voices. Or rather didn't do the voices. She seemed to have one female and one male voice. No accents or anything to keep the voices apart. Which got a little confusing now and again. But all in all it was ok.

This book seems to have a lot of positive reviews, so if you have read the blurb and think you're going to love it then I think you should give it a go. I honestly think the underlying story is ok, it just really needs some good editing...

Looked interesting though, might borrow it again :)
